Ignition Coil: Service and Repair

Ignition Coils with Power Output Stages

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Ignition Coil Puller (T40039)

- Remove rear engine cover - 2 -.





Removing cylinder bank 1 (right):

- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove left air duct.





- Open hose clamps - arrows - and remove right air guide hose.





- Disconnect electrical connector - 1 - on Engine Coolant Level (ECL) Warning Switch (F66) at bottom of coolant expansion tank.

- Remove bolts - 2 - and - 3 - and lay aside coolant reservoir with connected coolant hoses - 4 - and - 5 -.





- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 -.





- Pull ignition coils approximately 30 mm out of spark plug shaft using Ignition Coil Puller (T40039).





- Release electrical connectors and remove connectors simultaneously from ignition coils.

Removing cylinder bank 2 (left):

- Remove bolts - arrows - and remove left air duct.





- Open hose clamps - arrows - and remove left air guide hose.





- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 3 -.





- Pull ignition coils approximately 30 mm out of spark plug shaft using Ignition Coil Puller (T40039).





- Release electrical connectors and remove connectors simultaneously from ignition coils.

Installing the ignition coils

- Insert all ignition coils loosely into spark plug shaft.

- Align ignition coils to the connectors and then connect all of the connectors simultaneously onto the ignition coils.

- Press the ignition coils uniformly onto the spark plugs by hand (do not use an impact tool).
