Transaxle Assembly

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY R&R (Refer to SIM Sections 6C, 6H and 7A, Figures 6C-1, 6H-1, 7A-8, 10, 25 through 29, 34, 36 through 39, and 42 through 44 as well as Figures 5 and 8 of this bulletin.)

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air cleaner and TV cable at throttle and transaxle. Refer to Figure 7A-26.
3. Shift linkage, shift cable and bracket. (It is not necessary to remove the shift cable from the shift bracket.) Refer to Figures 6C-1 and 7A-8.
4. Electrical connectors.
^ converter clutch. Refer to Figure 7A-42 or 43.
^ neutral start and B/U lamp switch. Refer to Figure 7A-10.
5. Engine oil cooler and TV cable bracket. Refer to Figure 7A-26.
6. Upper bolts and studs #2, 3, 4, and 5 securing transaxle bell housing to engine block. Refer to Figure 7A-44.
7. Vacuum line at modulator. Refer to Figure 7A-34.
8. Install J-28467. Refer to Figure 8 of this bulletin.
9. Raise car.
10. Both front wheel assemblies.
11. Lower left ball joint from left steering knuckle. Refer to Front Suspension, Section 3C.
12. Stabilizer bolt from left control arm. Refer to Front Suspension, Section 3C.
13. Left engine splash shield.
14. Right front mud shield.
15. Speed sensor connector. Refer to Figure 7A-29.
16. Vacuum pump assembly from left cradle. Refer to Figure 6H-1. (Support the vacuum pump assembly to prevent any possible wiring and vacuum hose damage).
17. Left cradle member. Refer to Figure 5 of this bulletin for points of separation.
18. Drive axles from transaxle. Refer to Drive Axles, Section 4D.
19. Cooler lines at transaxle case and reposition. Refer to Figure 7A-36.
20. Flexplate shield. Refer to Figure 7A-27.
21. Converter to flexplate bolts. Refer to Figure 7A-28.
22. Left and right transaxle mount attachments. Refer to Figures 7A-37 and 38.
23. Transaxle to engine brace bolts. Refer to Figure 7A-39.
24. Position transmission jack under transaxle.
25. Bell housing bolts #1 and #6. Refer to Figure 7A-44.

IMPORTANT

To remove/install bolt at position #6, it is necessary to use a 3 foot long socket wrench extension to access the bolt through the right wheelhouse opening.

26. Separate and lower transaxle from car.
INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. Transaxle assembly.
2. Bell housing studs or bolts #1 and #6. Refer to Figure 7A-44.

TIGHTEN

^ Bell housing bolts/studs to 75 N.m (55 ft.lbs.).

IMPORTANT

HT4100 studs = positions #2, 3, 4; bolts = positions #1, 5, 6. 4.3L V-6 diesel studs = positions #1, 2; bolts = positions #3, 4, 6 (#5 is empty).

3. Converter to flexplate bolts. Refer to Figure 7A-28.

^ Bolts to 47 N.m (35 ft.lbs.).

4. Flexplate splash shield. Refer to Figure 7A-27.
5. Left rear transaxle mount. Refer to Figure 7A-37.
6. Right transaxle mount and engine to transaxle brace bolts. Refer to Figures 7A-38 and 39.

TIGHTEN

^ Mounting bracket to transaxle bolts to 55 N.m (40 ft.lbs.).
^ Nuts to 31 N.m (23 ft.lbs.).

7. Transaxle oil cooler lines. Refer to Figure 7A-36.

TIGHTEN

^ Fitting nuts to 21 N.m (15 ft.lbs.).

8. Extension housing support bracket. Refer to Figure 7A-39.
9. Fully seat drive axles. Refer to Drive Axles, Section 4D.
10. Left cradle member. Refer to Figure 5 of this bulletin.
11. Remove transmission jack.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

12. Vacuum pump. Refer to Figure 6H-1.
13. Speed sensor connector. Refer to Figure 7A-29.
14. Right front mud shield.
15. Left engine splash shield.
16. Lower ball joint to lower control arm and stabilizer bolt to control arm. Refer to Front Suspension, Section 3C.
17. Both front wheels.
18. Lower car.
19. Remove J-28467.
20. Upper bolts and studs #2, 3, 4, and 5 securing transaxle bell housing to engine block. Refer to Figure 7A-44.
TIGHTEN

^ Bolts/Studs to 75 N.m (55 ft.lbs.).

IMPORTANT

HT4100 studs = positions #2, 3, 4; bolts = positions #1, 5, 6. 4.3L V-6 diesel studs = positions #1, 2; bolts = positions #3, 4, 6 (#5 is empty).

INSTALL OR CONNECT

21. Fuel line brackets. Refer to Figure 6C-1.
22. TV cable bracket and dipstick tube. Refer to Figures 7A-25 and 26.
23. Modulator line. Refer to Figure 7A-34.
24. Electrical connectors

^ converter clutch. Refer to Figure 7A-42 or 43.
^ neutral start and B/U lamp switch. Refer to Figure 7A-10.

25. Air cleaner and negative battery cable.

ADJUST

^ Neutral start and B/U lamp switch as described in Section 7A.
^ Fluid level as described in Section 7A.
^ TV cable as described in Section 7A.
^ Shift linkage as described in Section 7A.
