Accessory Delay Module: Description and Operation

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is a standard feature for all Eldorados and Sevilles. The system allows the radio, wipers, power windows and the Astro Roof to be operated after the ignition has been turned "OFF". the system is designed to allow accessory operation for up to ten minutes after the ignition is turned "OFF". the system shuts "OFF" all accessories after ten minutes or if a door is opened before ten minutes has elapsed.

The main components of the RAP system are the RAP/Illuminated Entry (RAPIE) Module, door ajar switches, two RAP Relays and several fuses (see schematic).

When the RAPIE Module sees the ignition has been turned to run, the module performs two operations. First, it terminates illuminated entry and secondly, the module activates the two RAP Relays. the relays allow power to be supplied to the radio, wipers, power windows and the Astro Roof. the RAP Relays are wired in parallel with the Ignition Switch. This allows the circuits powered by the RAP Relays to still operate with the ignition in run if the RAP system should malfunction.

When the ignition is turned "OFF", the RAPIE Module starts a timer and continues to power the accessory circuits through the RAP Relays. After ten minutes, the RAPIE Module will de-energize the RAP Relays, cutting "OFF" power to the accessory circuits. If the RAPIE Module detects a door has been opened through the door ajar switches inputs, the RAPIE Module will de-energize the RAP Relays immediately.

CIRCUIT OPERATION
Battery voltage to power the RAP/Illuminated Entry (RAPIE) Module is applied to terminal A6 from Fuse B1 at all times. the RAPIE Module is grounded at terminal A5 by ground 6400. Battery voltage from Fuse C5 is always applied to both RAP Relays' coils through CKT 340.

Enabling

When the ignition is turned to run, voltage from Fuse A11 applied to the RAPIE Module terminal B1. This signals the RAPIE Module to energize the two RAP Relays. the module energizes the relays by grounding them, through CKT 707 at relay control terminal A4.

When the Trunk Compartment Micro Relay Center's RAP Relay is energized, the relay's contacts close to apply voltage to the radio and the Wiper/Washer Switch through CKT 4 and Fuses B11 and B13. the radio and wipers now can be operated.

When the other RAP Relay energizes, it also closes its contacts but it applies voltage to the RAP Circuit Breaker. the RAP Circuit Breaker supplies battery voltage to the power window switches and the Astro Roof circuits, allowing these systems to operate.

Disabling

When the ignition Switch is turned to "OFF", voltage is no longer applied to the RAPIE Module's terminal B1. This signals the RAPIE Module to start a timer while keeping the RAP Relays energized. After ten minutes, the module ungrounds CKT 707 and de-energizes the RAP Relays causing the RAP Relays to de-energize, cutting "OFF" power to the accessory circuits.

The RAPIE Module also monitors the position of the doors at terminals A2 and A3. If a door is opened, the door's respective door ajar switch closes, causing the RAPIE Module's door ajar input terminal to be grounded. the RAPIE Module responds by de-energizing the RAP Relays regardless of the time elapsed.
