Park Lock System Operational Check

Use the following procedure to verify correct park lock system operation:

Step 1:

With the console shift lever in "PARK" and the ignition switch in the "LOCK" position, pull up on the button on the shift lever and try to move the shift lever from the "PARK" position. The button should not move far enough to allow the shift lever to be moved from "PARK".

Step 2:

A. Turn the ignition switch to "RUN". It is not necessary to start the engine.

B. Depress the brake and move the shift lever to "REVERSE". Try to turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position. The ignition switch should move to "OFF" but not to "LOCK".

C. Turn the ignition switch to "RUN" and move the shift lever to "NEUTRAL". Again try to turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position. The ignition switch should move to "OFF" but not to "LOCK".

D. Turn the ignition switch to "RUN" and now move the shift lever to "OVERDRIVE" (D). Once more, try to turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position. The ignition switch should move to "OFF" but not to "LOCK".

Step 3:

Return shift lever to "PARK" and turn ignition to the "LOCK" position. Try to remove the key. The key should be easily removable from the ignition switch.

If the vehicle's ignition and shift control systems do not operate as described in this operational check, adjust the park lock cable as described below.
