Rear Engine Plate: Service and Repair

Tools Required, or equivalent: J41349 Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Aligning Tool.





REMOVAL
1. Remove the flywheel. See Transmission and Drivetrain.
2. Remove the oil pan.
3. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts.
4. Remove the crankshaft rear oil housing.
5. Remove the crankshaft rear oil housing gasket.
6. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal from the crankshaft rear oil seal housing.
7. Clean the gasket surfaces.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: Always use a new crankshaft rear oil seal and a new oil seal housing gasket during the installation of the crankshaft rear oil seal housing.

1. Install the new crankshaft rear oil seal housing and gasket. It is not necessary use any type of sealant in order to hold the oil seal housing gasket in place. The gasket can be positioned over the oil seal housing bolts to aid in the gasket alignment.
2. Finger tighten the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts.
3. Coat the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Aligning Tool with engine oil and twist or turn in order to aid in sliding the tool completely over the crankshaft.
4. Install the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Aligning Tool over the crankshaft.
5. Place the straight edge on the oil pan flange and rear oil seal housing flange.
6. Use a feeler gauge in order to measure the clearance on both sides.
7. Rotate the housing until the clearance is no more than 0.004 in step, high or low, on each side. If the housing can not be rotated in order to get the step within specifications, replace it with a new housing.
8. Tighten all of the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts. Tighten the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
9. Remove the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Aligning Tool.
10. Recheck the step height in order to make sure it is within specifications. If the step height is beyond specifications, repeat the procedure and measure again.





11. Install the crankshaft rear main oil seal.
12. Install the oil pan.
13. Install the flywheel. See Transmission and Drivetrain.
