Analyzing Results of the Water Test
The following charts provide a more detailed analysis of the water test results and possible leak sources located during testing.Each spray zone is covered individually and possible causes along with recommended repairs and sealers are outlined.
ZONE 1:

Test Results:
^ Water under front/rear carpet or in luggage compartment
Possible Causes:
^ Loose-missing fasteners (carpet, brake lines, seat belt bolts)
^ Loose floorpan grommets or tank unit inspection cover
^ Loose torsion bar fastener
^ Gaps in floor panel joints
Repair:
^ Tighten and seal with 3M08575
^ Spray underbody sealer 8983 100 004 on faulty panel joints
ZONE 2:
ZONE 2
Test results:
^ Water on floor near:
^ Apillars
^ B-C pillars or in luggage compartment
Possible Causes:
^ Faulty sealing or sealer out of position on panel joints
^ Faulty sealing of shock absorber tunnels
^ Loose seat belt bolts
^ Loose shock absorber fasteners
Repair
^ Apply 3M08646 seam sealer on faulty panel joints or use a sprayable type sealer such as Kent Ind. BFG-80405
^ Tighten fasteners (seat belt bolts, shock absorbers, etc.)
ZONE 3:
ZONE 3
Test Results:
^ Water on floor pan near pillars and doors
Possible Causes:
^ Faulty sealing of pillars and hinges
^ Door seals out of position
Repair:
^ Seal pillar/hinge joints with 3M08646 or use a sprayable type sealer such as Kent Ind. BFG-80405
^ Align door seal correctly (replace it if damaged)
ZONE 4:
ZONE 4
Test Results:
^ Water in rear of luggage compartment
Possible Causes:
^ Faulty sealing between rear end panel, quarter panel and luggage compartment gutter bottom supports
^ Tail lamp assembly seal or license plate light seals misaligned
^ Moulding, bezel or license plate fasteners loose
^ Bumper or shield fasteners loose
Repair
^ Seal the panel joints with 3M08646
^ Seal the tail lamp assemblies with 812 5154
^ Seal fastener area with 3M08575
ZONE 5:
ZONE 5
Test Results:
^ Water on front floor near cowl
^ Water dripping from under instrument panel
Possible Causes:
^ Poor sealing of cowl panel joints
^ Drain hole blocked
^ Loose/missing plugs or grommets in cowl panel
^ Faulty spotwelds
Repair
^ Apply 3M08646 or use a sprayable type sealer such as Kent I nd. BFG-80405.
^ Clear drain holes
^ Replace or reposition plugs/grommets
^ Seal spotwelds with 3M08646
ZONE 6:
ZONE 6
Test Results:
^ Water on front floor coming from panel cowl
Possible causes:
^ Faulty Sealing of cowl floor joint
^ Seals out of position on steering column and/or pedal assembly bracket).
^ Cable and/or wiring harness loose, missing.
Repair
^ Seal with 3M08646
^ Reposition and seal with 3M08509
^ Reposition or replace grommets. Be sure cables/harnesses are properly adjusted and not binding on grommets.
ZONE 7:
ZONE 7
Test Results:
^ Water on front floor, coming from under the instrument panel
Possible Causes:
^ Small gaps in urethane adhesive/sealer around windshield.
^ Large gaps in urethane adhesive/sealer around windshield (glass pulled away from urethane or body flange).
Repair
^ Seal small gaps from inside of vehicle with 3M08609.
^ Remove and reinstall windshield with urethane windshield installation kit 8124901.
ZONE 8:
ZONE 8
Test Results:
^ Water on front and rear floor near doors
Possible Causes:
^ Door seal out of position
^ Door out of adjustment
^ Faulty sealing of rear quarter window
^ Plastic water dam sheet installed incorrectly
Repair:
^ Reposition seal
^ Adjust door
^ Reseal rear quarter window with 3M08609 from the inside
^ Remove door trim panel and reinstall the plastic sheet. Then seal the sheet with 3M08041 or 08044
ZONE 9:
ZONE 9
Test Results:
^ Water in luggage compartment and on rear shelves
Possible Causes:
^ Deck lid seal faulty
^ Gutter supports not sealed
^ Gaps in urethane adhesive/sealer around rear window glass
Repair
^ Align or replace seal if damaged
^ Reseal with 3M08646 sealer
^ Gaps in rear window urethane adhesive/sealer If gaps are small, reseal from inside vehicle with 3M08609 urethane sealer. If gaps are large (glass pulled away from body or urethane bead, remove and reinstall window with installation kit 812 4901.
ZONE 10:
ZONE 10
Test Results:
^ Water near A, B or C Pillars
^ Water on rear shelves or in luggage compartment
^ Water inside B pillar (seat belt damp)
^ Water drips from sunroof
Possible Causes:
^ Poor sealing between body side and roof under mouldings
^ B-pillar joint not sealed.
^ Sunroof out of adjustment or drains blocked
Repair
^ Reseal joint between body side and roof using 3M08646
^ Reseal the B-pillar joint with 3M08646 sealer
^ Clear the sunroof drains and adjust the sunroof
