FAST IDLE CAM BINDING
1985-1987 Eagles built prior to VIN 2CXXXXXXX HB 701932 that exhibit erratic fast idle speeds may have contaminated fast idle linkage.
The contamination may be due to road splash into the engine compartment.
FIGURE 1:
A new splash shield kit for the bottom left side of the engine compartment has been released (Fig. 1).
Clean the linkage with choke and linkage cleaner (P/N 8993 549) and install the splash shield.
PROCEDURE
1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
2. Remove the skid plate.
3. Remove the left front oil pan bolt.
4. Install the supplied stud in place of the removed oil pan bolt. Tighten the stud (A - Fig. 2) to 9.5 N-m (7 ft-lbs) torque.
5. Install the splash shield.
NOTE: The splash shield must be installed above the transmission cooling lines (G).

a. Install by pushing the rear of the splash shield through the area (B - Fig. 2) between the transmission cooling lines (G) and the pitman arm.
b. Insert the section between the two slots, in the rear of the splash shield, under the motor mount support bracket (C - Fig. 2). Push the section of the splash shield to the right of the motor mount above the transmission cooling lines (D - Fig. 3). The section of splash shield to the left of the motor mount rests against the frame rail (E - Fig. 3).
c. Push the front of the splash shield over the transmission cooling lines (G). Pull the front section of the splash shield forward
and push it under the radiator, The front of the splash shield (F - Fig. 3) will rest between the coolant overflow hose and the radiator.
d. Install the section of splash shield with the predrilled hole over the stud installed at the left front oil pan bolt hole (A - Fig. 2).
e. Install the retaining nut and washer on the stud bolt. Tighten the nut.
NOTE: Be sure that the splash shield does not contact the vibration damper or drive belts.
6. Install the skid plate.
7. Lower the vehicle.
