Neutral Safety Switch: Description and Operation

On automatic transmission equipped vehicles, a gear selection indicator signal is sent to the Engine Control Unit (ECU) by the PARK/NEUTRAL safety switch. When the ECU receives a signal that the transmission is in gear, it will adjust engine idle speed to compensate for the additional engine load.
