(3)Engine Stalls On Engagement


1985 Ranger, Bronco II and Early 1986 Aerostar

Reports of an engine stall condition that occurs after engine start up and when shifting the transmission into any forward gear or reverse may be caused by a broken converter clutch shuttle valve spring. This will allow the shuttle valve to remain in the bottom on its bore thereby continuously applying the piston plate clutch in the torque converter. This provides a mechanical connection between the engine and wheels thus resulting in engine stall when the transmission is engaged.

Prior to taking any action, make sure that engine speeds are set to specification as shown on the Engine Emission Decal.

Disassemble the valve body from the transmission assembly and remove the separator plate. Follow the valve body removal procedure in Section 17-08 of the 1985 Ranger/Bronco II Shop Manual.

Refer to the valve body identification illustration in Section 17-08 of the Shop Manual or Figure 8, for the shuttle valve bore location (bore reference number 200). Locate the converter clutch shuttle valve spring. See Figure 8.


Remove the retainer plate, override solenoid, plug, valve and spring. Remove any foreign material from the bore. Do not dislodge the shuttle balls.
Install a new shuttle valve spring (E5TZ-7L490-A, color code dark green). Reinstall the other components in reverse order. Make sure the shuttle valve moves freely.

Install the separator plate and assemble the valve body into the transmission assembly per the procedure in Section 17-08 of the Shop Manual
