Front Pump Installation Procedures
A new pump bolt (E800512-S72, silver color) has been released with increased torque specifications (spec. 13-15 N-m, 9.6-11 ft.lbs.). Whenever overhauling the A4LD transmission, replace all old design pump bolts (black colored) with the new bolts and increase the torque. Do not increase torque specification with old design (black colored) bolts.
When installing housing and pump to case, always install new aluminum washers (E830124-S) under bolt as instructed in Shop Manual.
Use front pump alignment tools (Kit No. T74P- 77103-X) and follow procedure for tool usage in the A4LD section of the Shop Manual. These procedures must be followed to prevent seal leakage, pump gear noise or breakage or bushing failure.
Front Pump Seal "Blow-Out"
When the condition of "Seal Blow-Out" is found in 1985-87 vehicles, a new housing/seal assembly has been released and must be used for service to prevent repeat repairs. New service tools are presently being developed to remove, replace and restake the seal and will be available in the 1987- 1/2 special service tool program. Until the new tools are available, all seal repairs on housings with staked seals will require replacement of the housing assembly.
NOTE: DO NOT remove the staked seal and try to replace with tools presently available or repeat failure may occur.

Leaks at Converter Override Clutch Connector
There may be a leak at the converter clutch override connector and transmission case. This condition may be caused by sump fluid migrating up the override connector wires and depositing at the terminals at the top of the connector.
This condition may be corrected by replacing the switch (E5TZ-7E449-A). See Figure 7.

Leak at Vent Tube
When some A4LD transmissions are overfilled, subjected to extended driving, operated in high ambient temperatures, or used in trailer towing, they may experience transmission fluid leakage at the transmission vent tube rubber hose due to swelling or looseness. If a customer's vehicle exhibits any of the above and leakage is apparent, the following service procedure should be followed:
^ Verify that the transmission fluid leakage is originating at the L.H. rear of the transmission case (in the vent fitting area).
^ Check the transmission vent tube connecting hose to the vent fitting for swelling, looseness or any evidence of transmission fluid on the hose.
^ In those instances where the hose exhibits swelling, looseness, or is contaminated with transmission fluid, remove and discard the vent hose. If during servicing of the transmission for other repairs, it is evident that the vent tube hose has been contaminated with transmission fluid, the hose should also be replaced.
^ For A4LD transmission, hose (E3TZ-7A246-F) is used and is cut to a 5 inch length.

Leaks at Vent Assembly Due to Counterbore Wear
Fluid leakage at the transmission vent assembly may be caused by governor seal ring wear or transmission case wear (counterbore area), allowing internal leakage past the transmission governor. If the seal rings and transmission case need to be replaced because of this wear, new viton rubber seal rings (E7TZ-7D011-A) should be used. These new seal rings are available as a separate service part. If the original transmission case is used, the cast iron seal rings (D4ZZ-7D011-B) should be installed. Refer to the procedure outlined in the appropriate Car or Light Truck Shop Manual.
NOTE: Use of viton rubber seals in a worn or grooved transmission case (counterbore area) will result in a recurrence of leakage past the governor.
