Air Conditioning Compressor Seal Replacement (for Hitachi compressor)


Seal kits are available for Hitachi air conditioning compressors. The special tools required for seal removal/installation are available from a number of sources.



PROCEDURE

1. Using the procedures explained in the appropriate service manuals disconnect the compressor hoses, then remove the compressor from the engine. Remove the pulley nut.

2. Remove the seal seat using the seat remover.*
3. Remove the clutch pressure plate, circlip, pulley, and clutch coil.



4. Place the seal remover over the compressor shaft. Push down on the tool, then rotate it clockwise until its tabs lock into the old seal. Pull up on the tool to remove the seal.
5. Place the new seal on the tool. Slip the seal and tool over the end of the shaft. Push down and rotate clockwise until you feel the seal lock into a detent. Rotate the tool counterclockwise and remove.

Their tool numbers are: Seal Remover/Installer J 9392-01 and Seal Seat Remover J 9393-A.



5. Reassemble the remaining parts in reverse order of disassembly.

NOTE: Apply some refrigerant oil on the new seal seat O-ring before installing.

WARRANTY

Normal 12 month/12,000 mile warranty applies.

For Civic: Use operation number 000396 with a total time of 1.3 hours.

For Prelude: Use operation number 000290 with a total time of 1.4 hours. For models with power steering, add an additional 0.4 hours.

The flat rate times given include: removal and installation of compressor, clutch plate, and seal, and evacuation and charging of the A/C system.
