PROBLEM

Noise from TEC-brand distributor.

NOTE: You can identify a TEC distributor by its external igniter.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The bushing in the top plate is worn, allowing the reluctor to hit the stator, and/or the rotor to hit the distributor cap.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Install a new ball bearing-type top plate, and replace any damaged parts.

Top plate assembly:

1. Remove the distributor cap and pull off the rotor.

2. Drive out the pin in the shaft collar with a 3mm pin punch and remove the collar, then remove the top plate (2 screws).

RELUCTOR:

3. Lift out the stator, then carefully pry off the reluctor using two screwdrivers as shown.

4. Use a small magnet to pick up any metal chips in the distributor housing, then clean out the housing with contact cleaner and a shop towel.

5. Carefully inspect the reluctor and stator (especially the tips), also the rotor and the inside of the distributor cap. Replace any damaged parts.

6. Install the reluctor. Make sure the side with the letter stamped on it is facing out. Also make sure the gap in the pin is facing away from the shaft.

7. Clean and lube the bearing in the stator, then set the stator in place.. Make sure you get the pin on the stator into the hole in the advance diaphragm arm.

TOP PLATE:

8. Install the new top plate and secure it with the screws and special clips provided.

9. Reinstall the collar and 3 mm pin, 10. Install the rotor and cap.

Distributor bushing failure is covered by the New Car Warranty on 49-State cars, and the Emission Controls Warranty on California cars. However, if the warranty has expired, this repair, like any other, is eligible for goodwill consideration by your District Service Manager.
