AIR BAG SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS AFTER A COLLISION

APPLIED MODELS:
All SRS equipped vehicles

SERVICE INFORMATION

This Technical Bulletin clarifies the inspection/repair procedures for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) equipped vehicles. These instructions should be used in conjunction with the existing service manuals. There are 2 ways to perform self diagnosis on an SRS vehicle, using either CONSULT or onboard self diagnosis. Onboard self diagnosis will not diagnose seat belt pre-tensioners J30 only). Do not switch between CONSULT and onboard self diagnosis without completing all the steps listed for each type of self diagnosis.

When the air bag has deployed in a collision:

1. Replace the control unit.
2. Remove the air bag module(s) and seat belt pre-tensioners.





3. Check the SRS components using the table "SRS Inspection".
4. Conduct self-diagnosis using CONSULT or onboard self diagnosis to ensure the entire SRS operates properly except open circuit of air bag module(s) and seat belt pre-tensioners.
5. Install new air bag module(s) and seat belt pre-tensioners.

When the airbag did not deploy in the collision:

1. Check the SRS components using the table "SRS Inspection".
2. Conduct self-diagnosis using CONSULT or onboard self diagnosis to ensure entire SRS operates properly.

Using CONSULT:

1. Connect CONSULT to vehicle harness connecton
2. Turn ignition "ON".
3. START" to turn CONSULT on.
4. AIR BAG" to select air bag system.
5. "SELF DIAG RESULTS" to read self diagnosis results.
6. Problem codes displayed on "SELF DIAG RESULT 1" are Present Mode results.
7. Touch "PAGE DOWN" or "DOWN ARROW" to read "SELF DIAG RESULT 2" the codes listed are Initial Mode results.
8. After replacing the malfunctioning parts, press "ERASE" to clear self diagnosis results.
9. Touch "BACK" key until "SELECT SYSTEM" is displayed.

Using onboard self diagnosis:

1. Push the driver's door switch "ON" and "OFF" more than 5 times within 7 seconds after the ignition switch is ON".
2. Observe flashes of "AIR BAG" warning lamp to obtain Present Mode results.
3. Push the driver's door switch once within 7 seconds after the ignition switch is turned from "OFF" to "ON".
4. Observe flashes of "AIR BAG" warning lamp to obtain Initial Mode results.
5. After replacing the malfunctioning parts, push the driver's door switch once within 7 seconds after the ignition switch is turned from "OFF" to "ON". This returns self diagnosis to Present Mode.
6. Push the driver's door "ON" and "OFF" more than 5 times within 7 seconds after the ignition key is turned from "OFF" to "ON". This returns self diagnosis to User mode.
7. If self diagnosis cannot be accessed or the "AIR BAG" warning lamp is on continuously, then replace the control unit.

CAUTION:
Before replacing any components, disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes before starting repairs.


WARRANTY INFORMATION:

Collision damage is not warrantable. Repairs to the SRS necessitated by a collision are at the customers expense.
