Correct Freelander Wheel Bearing Installation

SITUATION

Freelander wheel bearings must be installed with the "magnetic" side of the bearing toward the inboard side of the hub. That side of the bearing provides the magnetic impulse pattern required for correct operation of ABS. If installed backwards, the ABS warning light will illuminate immediately after a wheel bearing has been replaced.

RESOLUTION

Install the wheel bearing with the black seal toward the inside of the vehicle.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:
The information in the RAVE Workshop Manual Sections 60.25.14 and 64.15.14 is incomplete with regard to bearing installation and correct bearing orientation. The next RAVE edition will contain updated information.

1. Position the replacement bearing with the black seal surface inward.

2. Press against the non-magnetic "silver" outer bearing surface to seat the bearing using the tools and processes specified in RAVE.
