Steering "Pull" Troubleshooting

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

SITUATION:

STEERING PULL ON LEVEL SURFACE

The customer may complain that the vehicle tends to pull to one side, even when driving on a level road.

RESOLUTION:

INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE CAUSES AND RESOLVE

There may be one or more causes of steering pull. Work through the following diagnostic procedures and tests to establish the causes. Repair the various causes as encountered.

WARRANTY CLAIMS:

NOTE:
Any repairs resulting from investigation process prior to rack replacement are to be carried out as a separate warranty claim. Refer to RTS for the individual repair times and complaint codes.

57.10.01 Time 2.30 hrs.
When indicated by troubleshooting, replace PAS rack.

FAULT CODE: A

Normal warranty policy and procedures apply.

Material allowance is included in labor operation.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE CAUSES OF STEERING PULL AND CORRECT

1. Inspect all tires for correct manufacturer suggested inflation level of 206 kPa (30 psi)

2. If incorrect pressures are found, correct tire pressure.

3. Inspect front and rear suspension bushes for wear and damage.

4. If worn bushings are discovered, install new front or rear suspension components as indicated.

5. Inspect the PAS system hoses from the steering rack to the reservoir for kinks, damage, blockages or leaks.

NOTE:
PAS return hoses were modified in production at VIN 3A242288 to a new elliptical profile hose. A "flattened" appearance on hoses after the above VIN is the correct condition. Oval hoses after VIN 3A242288 DO NOT require replacement. Refer to Technical Alert TA03 5702.

6. If inspection reveals any PAS return hoses that are kinked, damaged, blocked or leaking, replace the damaged hose.

7. Position the vehicle on a ramp and ensure wheels rotate freely.

8. Determine if the front or rear brakes are dragging or binding.

9. If brake binding is determined, adjust or replace components to correct the problem.

10. Carry out front and rear suspension geometry inspection.

11. If any specification is incorrect, adjust geometry.

12. If vehicle still pulls to one side after adjustment and all corrective action is completed, install a new Power Assisted Steering rack (QAB000311).
