PAINT - BASECOAT/CLEARCOAT CRACKING - SERVICE INFORMATION
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1978-82 LINCOLN, MARK
Some Basecoat/Clearcoat vehicles exposed to high sun load for approximately 24 months or longer may experience a cracking or crazing of the paint on the horizontal surfaces. This concern, when present, results in a "milky" appearance and usually occurs only on dark colors. The concern has been corrected on current units with improved materials and process procedures.
The conventional service method for this condition is to sand the affected surface down until all signs of the cracking and crazing are gone. This usually requires going into the primer and/or bare metal.
However, a unique refinishing product has been found to be effective in eliminating the need to completely remove the cracks and crazing before refinishing. With this product, only minimal sanding with medium sandpaper to allow application of the material is necessary. The product is a unique primer/sealer and is available nationally as Rinshed-Mason No. 806 Barrier Coat (or equivalent).
Appropriate information for usage of this water-borne red primer/sealer is on the container label. After application, the service is completed with the usual basecoat/clearcoat paint materials available nationally using industry-wide refinishing procedures.
