SPEED CONTROL - ERRATIC OPERATION

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 CONTINENTAL

ISSUE: After the speed control system has been actuated, erratic operation of the steering wheel mounted controls may be caused by loss of electrical (physical) brush contact with the steering wheel slip rings. This may be caused by the speed control brush spring load.

ACTION: Install a new speed control brush assembly with upgraded brush springs. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to the 1988 Continental Shop Manual, Section 13-04 for service details.

2. Remove the existing speed control brush assembly and throw it away.

3. Remove ALL the old grease from the slip ring contact plate.

NOTE: DO NOT USE CLEANING SOLVENTS. THEY COULD DAMAGE THE SLIP RINGS PLASTIC CARRIER.

4. Apply synthetic grease (E8AZ-19590-A) Ford specification ESA-M1C221-A on the slip ring and brush contact plate area.

5. Install a new speed control brush assembly, (E80Y-9C899-B).

NOTE: THIS TSB ARTICLE SUPERSEDES OASIS MESSAGE 5892, DATED 6/05/88. THE 2 mm SHIM IS NO LONGER REQUIRED WITH THE NEW SPEED CONTROL BRUSH ASSEMBLY.

6. Reinstall the steering wheel. Refer to the 1988 Continental Shop Manual, Section 13-04 for service details.

7. Check the speed control system for proper operation.
