Speed Control/Horn Brush Contact Plate

1. Disarm airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Place vehicle front wheels in the straight ahead position.
3. Remove four nut and washers retaining air bag module to the steering wheel.
4. Disconnect air bag electrical connector from clockspring contact connector.
5. Remove air bag module from steering wheel. Place air bag module on a flat surface with the trim cover facing up.
6. Disconnect speed control and horn switches from contact assembly.
7. Remove steering wheel retaining bolt, install steering wheel puller, part No. T67L-3600-A, or equivalent, then remove steering wheel. Route contact assembly wiring harness through steering wheel as wheel is lifted off.
8. Remove tilt lever, if equipped, then the lower trim panel and lower steering column shroud.
9. Disconnect contact assembly wiring harness, then apply two pieces of tape across contact assembly stator and rotor, to prevent accidental rotation.
10. Remove three contact assembly retaining screws, then lift contact assembly from steering column shaft.
11. Disconnect speed control brush wiring harness from connector, then remove wiring harness retainers from steering column.
12. Remove screw, retaining brush assembly to upper steering column, then remove brush and harness assembly.
13. Reverse procedure to install. Torque brush retaining screw and contact assembly screws to 18-26 inch lbs., then the steering wheel retaining nut to 23-33 ft. lbs.
14. Reactivate airbag as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
