The Calsonic air conditioner compressors in factory air conditioned 1981 210 models have been modified to incorporate an integral muffler in the low pressure hose. However, 210 models equipped with dealer installed Calsonic air conditioning do not have mufflers. The units may emit a rhythmical throbbing sound from the compressor under certain load and temperature conditions. Any 1980 or 1981 210 model that exhibits this compressor pulsation noise can be modified to incorporate an in-line muffler.


Procedure

1. Connect the manifold gauges to the proper service valves. Slightly open both gauge valves and slowly discharge the refrigerant.

NOTE: Unless the refrigerant is discharged slowly, compressor oil will be discharged with it. Vent the discharged refrigerant to the shop exhaust system.

2. When the refrigerant is completely discharged, disconnect and remove the low pressure refrigerant hose from the low pressure (suction) port of the compressor and the cooling unit.

3. Connect the new flex-hose with the in-line muffler between the compressor suction port and the cooling unit. The fitting closest to the muffler is connected to the compressor.

4. Evacuate and recharge the system as outlined in the service manual, starting on page HA-16. The correct refrigerant capacity for both models is 28-35 oz. If a significant amount of compressor lubricant is lost while discharging the system, it must be replaced.


Parts Information

Two muffler kits are available. To determine the one required, look at the fitting on the end of the original hose. One is an O-ring type and is made of aluminum; the other is a flare type and made of copper. The copper fitting is used in the old air conditioning systems.
