Shift Cable: Adjustments

ACCELERATOR & KICKDOWN LINKAGE, ADJUST

1. Start engine and run until it reaches normal operating temperature, ensure accelerator is in idle position and that throttle is closed, then stop engine.
2. Place selector lever at ``P,'' set parking brake and block drive wheels.
3. Loosen pedal cable adjusting nut at transaxle.
4. Remove retaining clips securing push/pull rods to relay levers, then disconnect push/pull rods.
5. Rotate pull rod relay lever counterclockwise to stop, hold in this position and adjust ball socket on pull rod until socket slips easily over ball stud on relay lever.
6. Reconnect push/pull rods to relay lever and secure with retaining clips.
7. Loosen adjusting nut on pushrod at transaxle, adjust pushrod so that transaxle lever is in ``no throttle'' position and throttle body lever is against stop, then tighten adjusting nut. Ensure pushrod fits easily on transaxle operating lever.
8. Loosen locknut (lower nut) securing cable to bracket.
9. Have helper depress and hold accelerator pedal against floor stop, then adjust cable with upper nut until transaxle operating lever moves upward (toward cable bracket) to stop, then tighten lower locknut.
10. Check operation as follows:
a. Push throttle lever against idle stop and observe transaxle operating lever. Lever must be in ``no throttle'' position.
b. Push accelerator pedal to full throttle position (without kickdown). Throttle valve lever must contact full throttle stop and kickdown spring in pushrod must not be compressed.
c. Fully depress accelerator pedal. Transaxle operating lever must contact stop and kickdown spring in pushrod should be compressed 13/32 inch (10.5 mm).
