SUBJECT: CORRECT METHOD FOR FITTING TRANSMISSION ISSUE: 07/87-980 TO THE ENGINE

APPLICATION: 9000 MODELS WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

HOLDER 87-91-477:

SLEEVE 87-91-485:

Improperly fitting the transmission to the engine can cause damage to the oil pump within the transmission. The torque converter must be in proper position as the transmission is bolted up, otherwise the drive ears can be broken off the pump.

Proper positioning of the converter can be verified with the aid of Holder 87- 91-477 and Sleeve 87-91-485 (both are shipped with replacement transmissions). Using these as a gauge, place the sleeve over the pilot on the converter. The two arms of the holder should be flush with the face of the housing.

If it does not fit flush, remove the converter and note the position of the drive slots and the pump gear ears. Assemble the converter onto the transmission splines and then into the pump, rechecking using the holder.

Careful assembly also prevents damage to the oil pump lip seal.
