9000 Model Line Up

With the 1993 model year several redesigned 9000 models have been introduced. Changes are highlighted with *.

^ 9000 CS Model -

* New Features:

Restyled front end with lower hood (approx. 1.5 in. lower than CD) and improved lighting.

Rear of the car completely restyled with a wraparound rear glass and dramatically different lighting.

The five-door opera window is deleted. C-pillar looks much cleaner, and more importantly, is strengthened for even better roll-over performance.

Rear parcel shelf is now hinged to fold neatly away when loading trunk and the shelf supports with integrated speaker enclosures are more "finished" than their counterparts on earlier 5-door models.

The entire structure of the car has been strengthened and the resulting increase in rigidity provides both improved road handling and reduced interior noise.

Wool upholstery package (no cost option), 2.3 liter turbocharged engine rated at 200 hp (includes TRIONIC engine management system, TCS, high speed tires and rear spoiler).

^ 9000 CD Model -

Specifications:

1993 models have a 5-speed manual transmission as standard. A 4-speed automatic transmission is available as an extra cost option. Other specifications and options are the same as the CS model described above, except CD models have 15-spoke light alloy wheels and are not available with rear window wash/wipe or rear spoiler.

^ 9000 CDE Model -

Specifications:

Same as the CSE model described above, including available options, except CDE also has walnut instrument panel fascia, self-levelling rear suspension and rear decor panel (not on CD).

Technical News for 1993:

^ Standardized Nomenclature:
Future publications will use a new format for naming emissions-related components. This is done to standardize the industry-wide names used for these parts. Example: fuel system computer will now be called "engine control module" or "ECM".

^ Easy-to-Read ISAT Screens:
New regulations require that within a few years a certain amount of emissions-related diagnostic information must be accessible to any qualified technician on all new cars without having to purchase brand-specific test equipment. This mandate will change the appearance of how fault codes appear on test equipment, and also will eventually include a word explanation of the problem area.

^ New Location for Catalyst:
The catalyst has been moved forward about 2 feet to allow it to reach its operating temperature sooner, and increase its efficiency. Hydrocarbon emissions are reduced by about 25%.

^ New ignition Cassette:
A new DI cassette has been introduced in 1993. It incorporates a 10-pin locking style connector, coils permanently mounted and upgraded contact springs and rubber boots connecting the coils to the spark plugs providing better contact/less chance of flashover.

^ New Engine Management System (9000):
A new system called "TRIONIC Engine Management System" has been introduced. Some highlights are:

1. Utilizes only one computer, thus eliminating connectors and wiring harnesses needed to link the various control units in older systems.

2. Injectors trigger sequentially on the Trionic system, allowing more precise fuel metering and allowing the fuel flow to individual cylinders to vary as the need occurs.

3. Injectors are a new "twin-jet" design which aims an individual spray pattern at each intake valve. The resulting effect is similar to having eight individual injectors.

4. Air Mass Meter has been replaced by a Manifold Pressure Sensor. This simplified hardware accomplishes the same results because of "smarter" electronics in the computer.

5. Knock detector is eliminated due to improved DI cassette design which utilizes an enhanced ionization signal circuit to calculate when detonation takes place.

6. To reduce cranking time, a "BEFORE-START" function has been programmed into the Trionic Engine Control Module (ECM) to spray a small, temperature-dependent quantity of fuel at all cylinders as the ignition key is turned on but prior to starter engagement.

^ Central Locking and Alarm System Improvements
Listed below are some highlights of changes made to the central locking and alarm systems for 1993 9000's.

1. Passenger door now has the same control over central locking and alarm systems as the driver's door.

2. Gas cap door is once more part of the central locking system (i.e., no separate key required).

3. New rocker switch has been placed alongside the sunroof switch on the center console which allows the driver or front seat passenger to operate the door locks.

4. Trunk lock switch is now tied into the alarm module so that you can open JUST the trunk without triggering the alarm. Alarm resets itself automatically after trunk is closed. Applies to CS models as well which also share the trunk release button on the driver's door panel as do CD models.

5. An easily accessible filler door lock emergency release has been introduced. Drop down the tool kit and you will note a bright plastic tab attached to the lock plunger via a wire cable.

Transmission Improvements, 1993 9000 production:

1. The differential assembly on all 9000 Turbos has been upgraded with the introduction of radial needle thrust bearings behind the differential pinion and side gears in place of the plain, steel thrust washers used in the past.

2. A safety feature which links the brake pedal, ignition switch and shift lever has been added to all 1993 9000 model automatics. This interlock system results in your not being able to move the shift lever out of PARK until the ignition switch has been turned on and until the brake pedal has been depressed. It also results in the key not being able to be removed from the ignition switch until the shift lever is placed back into PARK.

3. Variant coding for transmissions with these new features incorporated are:

Manual - GM 75701

Automatic - GA 74310

^ New ABS Braking System:

A new ABS Braking System, designated "ABS IV", has been introduced on all 9000's except TCS equipped vehicles with manual transmission. Some advantages of this new system:

1. Quieter operation and better pedal feel.

2. Substantially lower repair costs due to less complex design of new master cylinder/booster assembly.

3. New provision for ABS function remaining on the two wheels that still have brakes in the event of major component failure.

4. Simple float switch in the reservoir replaces the pressure switch used in the past and results in a change in the operation of BRAKE FLUID and ANTI LOCK warning lights. Now the BRAKE FLUID light will only come on as a result of loss of fluid from a leak or extreme pad wear. The ANTI LOCK light will now come on only when the ABS ECU detects a problem with the wheel speed sensors, valve block or pump speed. It will not be turned on if there is a problem with the fluid level or pressure.

^ Wool Upholstery Option (9000 models):

In 1993 an option of wool upholstery is offered with the same equipment level as with leather packages. The door panel inserts and padded armrests match the seat fabric on cars equipped with this option.

^ New Air Conditioning Refrigerant:

A new chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)-free refrigerant has been introduced on 1993 9000 models. This alternative refrigerant is called R 134a and is ozone friendly. All components operate the same as those used in R12 systems but are not interchangeable. Damage to hoses, o-rings, etc. will result if components from a R12 system are placed within a R134a system. New leak detecting and servicing equipment are required for R134a systems.

^ Rear Air Conditioning Dropped:

No 1993 model will be equipped with rear air conditioning. That system is not compatible with R134a refrigerant.
