Pre-installation

CAUTION: ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE BECAUSE AN ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT WITH A MEMORY FUNCTION IS BEING INSTALLED. PERMANENT DAMAGE COULD RESULT IF ELECTRICALLY SHORTED DURING INSTALLATION.
A. Vacuum Pump and Actuator Installation

1. Connect the vacuum pump electrical connector to the harness before installing the pump to the mounting bracket.
2. Use the long green colored M6X16 bolts to allow the installation of the A/C Receiver Dryer later on, if not equipped with A/C.
3. The vacuum hose white plastic clamp will fit easier over the brake lines and the vacuum hose with the lock tab in the "UP" position with the lock tab facing the engine.
4. The actuator cable adjustment at the throttle body can be simplified by using a 1.0 mm feeler gauger to measure the gap between the throttle cam and the throttle cam stop on the throttle body. Tighten the cable adjusting and locking nuts using two 12 mm combination wrenches.

B. Safety Switch Installation

To expedite the installation of the brake and clutch switches (if equipped) only remove the nut on the inside of the pedal bracket and do not disturb the position of the locking nut located on the outside of the bracket. Align the top of the threaded portions of both the switch or bolt being discarded with the appropriate replacement cruise safety switch. Position the locking nut on the replacement switch to the same position as the locking nut on the switch or bolt being discarded. Install the safety switch without disturbing the locking nut location by tightening the inside pedal bracket nut. (This will ensure the safety switch is in the same position as the switch being discarded. Tighten the switch using two 14 mm combination wrenches.)

C. Main Switch Installation

Removing the existing dashboard switch to gain access to the main switch connector and switch plug can be simplified. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to dislodge the clips holding the rear window defogger switch in the switch panel. Pop the defogger switch out and slip two fingers into the opening and remove the switch panel from the dash, then remove the brown harness connector from the blank switch plug; remove the plug and install the cruise main switch and connect the connector. Reinstall the switch panel and defogger switch in the dash. This procedure will prevent scratches or damage to the dash from prying on the switch panel.

D. Command Switch Installation

Caution: Be careful not to strip the head of the screw that secures the horn pad to the steering wheel. Only use a sharp knife to trim the rear cover to prevent miscuts and discoloration of the plastic material.
E. Control Unit Installation

1. Connect the control unit wiring harness connectors before installing the control unit because the control unit 20-pin and 4-pin connectors have a tight fit.

2. When reassembling the dash reinforcing bracket, make sure the square hole for the lover 6 mm retaining bolt is positioned between the body and the dash to prevent misalignment and possible damage to the dashboard and the glove box.
Note: If either the dash reinforcing bracket, the glove box reinforcing bar, or the glove box are not properly reinstalled in their original positions, the glove box will not close because it is designed to close securely to prevent rattles.

F. Final Assembly

CAUTION: If the electronic control unit senses any manfunctions in the vehicle's emission or safety devices, power to the cruise control electronic control unit will be cut off. This will prevent the use of cruise control. This is a normal function and once the problem is repaired, the cruise control system should operate properly. If not, consult the Subaru Legacy Service Manual for diagnostic procedures.
