New multi-link final drive housing with a new upper bushing
A new final drive housing and upper bushing have been introduced for cars with the multi-link rear axle starting from the 1992 model. In addition, the breather hole has been moved from the housing itself to the cover.
The bushing is in two halves
There is only one assembly position and one type of bushing for all engines.
The two halves of the bushing are held together by a conical socket.
Air hole in the cover
The air hole has been moved from the housing to the cooler.
New tool 9995503-1
A new tool for replacing the bushing has been developed. The unit must be removed from the car before this job is carried out.
See Service Manual 6 (65) Rear Suspension Multi-link for instructions on removing the final drive from the car and installing it.
Replacing the bushing
File down the cone on one end of the socket and knock apart the two halves of the bushing.
Installation or new bushing
Install the new bushing halves. Use tool 5503 so that the conical nut is against that side of the socket to be coned.
Press the bushing together
Using the tool first press the two halves together by screwing in that part of the tool marked with an arrow. At the same time guide the tool so that the two halves of the bushing end up in the correct position, as shown in the picture.
The bushing should be pressed together to 95 +/- 0.2 mm. (measured on the tool in accordance with the picture).
Coning the end of the socket
Cone the end of the socket with the conical nut on the tool in accordance with the picture, see arrow.
Remove the tool
