New shock absorber attachment on front steering knuckle





From M/Y 1994 850, the holes in the steering knuckle for the shock absorber strut mounting bolts have been increased from diameter 12.1 mm to diameter 13 mm. The strut assemblies are aligned and held in proper position by factory mounting fixtures. The mounting bolts are then installed to maintain this factory setting. When servicing the front shock absorbers, removal of the mounting bolts may allow the factory setting to be altered.





When replacing shock absorbers on cars with the new steering knuckles, two steel sleeves, p/n 9153007-1, are to be used. These are to be installed in the steering knuckle bolt holes as illustrated. This will align the knuckle within service specifications.

Bolts may be hard to turn in the steel sleeves).

Note:
Steering knuckles with diameter 13 mm mounting holes are being introduced as a replacement part and will replace earlier versions.

If camber is outside the tolerances 0~ + 10 it must be adjusted. The variation between left and right should be a maximum of 1~.





Adjusting camber

Raise car and remove wheel

Cars with steel sleeves in the steering knuckles:
Remove the upper, if necessary, both steel sleeves from the steering knuckle. This depends on how great the adjustment to be made. Removal of one sleeve will allow a camber adjustment of about 0.5". Both sleeves removed will allow an adjustment of about 1~.

Cars without steel sleeves in steering knuckles:
Replace screws and nuts and adjust as follows:

Note:
Install new screws and nuts. Tighten screws so that, with some resistance, the steering knuckle can be moved in or out in relation to the shock absorber strut. Then turn the steering knuckle inwards or outwards as much as the play between hole and screw allows.

After adjustment tighten both screws to 65 N-m (47 ft.lbs.) and angle tighten to 90~.

Install wheel Ensure that brake disc and rim contact surfaces are clean. Lubricate the wheel hub center guide. Use rust inhibitor p/n 1161405. Finger tighten screws. then tighten crosswise to 110 N-m (81 ft.lbs.).

Note:
The previous kit, p/n 271661-1, for adjusting camber, which is used on 1993 models must not be used on the new steering knuckles.
